was in the office this afternoon and since there werent anything to do, as usual, i turned my attention to the stack of newspapers lying on the table top. i cant exactly remember the following article on which im gonna comment on, but its towards the first half of the newspaper section.
i read with interest and much excitement i may add, that smoking will be banned in more places with effect from july next year, that the coffeeshops i visit once in a blue moon, will not be smoke chambers any further.
also, i took note of the fact that passive smoking is x2 times more lethal than smoking the actual stick itself. imagine all the damage we are inflicting on our poor lungs and loved ones!
it is, in my humble opinion, utterly disgusting that smokers are doing so much harm to the pple around them. sure, they may smoke however much,i dun care at all. however, how SELFISH of them to expose innocent pple to the smoke? shouldnt they just all gather at a spot (like in army) and just smoke themselves to death?
anyhow, back to the topic. i was relieved that the government is FINALLY doing something about the "smoking" problem. its about time i tell u. however, it soon occured to me that even it is legal, who will enforce the law? who will listen to words that appear on newspaper and are spoken on tv? do all those ah peks and rebellious teens care?
i know it is wrong to generalise smokers. i empathise a small portion of them actually. it is the bad company, stress and financial problems that gently nudge them towards the point of no-return. however, for those smokers who think it is cool to smoke, well they are wrong. dead wrong. what a pun huh?
i do sincerely hope that smokers will stop smoking their lungs, that they will rethink and consider the long-term as well as short-term harm to their bodies. also, it is vital that they take the first step. it will be a long journey, but perseverence will pay off. i can personally guarantee that.
and that is my take on the smoking issue.
PS: i feel that education will go a long way towards making s'pore a smoke-free society. enforcement of the no-smoking rule via arrests, fines will definitely not deter smokers.
