i was just thinking the other day, ok well today haha, abt the size of servings restaurants put on the table for customers. i know how the saying goes that too much of a good thing is bad, yet are the servings we get when we order food from these posh food outlets, justifiable for the money we fork(pun intended)out?
i remember having my dinner once at crystal jade at woodlands with my family. i was famished, and was filled with anticipation over the food i would be eating. it was short-lived. it was then, that i realised how PUNY the servings were. i din like what was ordered and there was simply too little for too much money.
look, i do realise that restaurants have their forte - dishes that are their signature, their staple, their show-horse so to speak. yet i din find those dishes offered, superbly delicious or even comparable to some small shops stationed at coffee shops.
haha, i have nothing against crystal jade or any restaurants for that matter. a little pretension wont hurt, but i truly believe you can never get enough of a good thing..you nutritionists out there, stop muttering abt moderation! satisfaction > starvation.
ok anyhow, i've grown to like simple food prepared by unpretentious, non-descript hawkwer stalls. somehow it tastes different - would you prefer a bowl of tasty bak chor mee with heavenly pieces of meat scattered all over along with chilli, or a bowl of yellow, waxy noodles that are so common-place amongst commericalised food courts? simple answer, the batter.
after having said so much, i feel that while restaurants are good for those first-dates and grand occasions, most hawker food are just plain better. im sure the famous cantonese chicken rice wasnt prepared in airconditioned, sterilised kitchens. im sure most of the signature dishes famed in singapore and anywhere for the matter, werent cooked in high-class restaurants.
alright, im going back to stroking my budging stomach :) and its not erotic at all.
